Biography

Scottish flag
John (Butter) Buttars was born in Scotland.

John James Buttars was born on the 12 January 1860, at Blairgowrie, Perthshire, Scotland, United Kingdom.[1]. It is recorded from his birth record, that his last name at birth was Butter, not Buttars. He was the son of David Buttars and Christina Henderson Brown. John was one of 6 children.

John married Emily Butchart Macpherson in 1888, at Coupar Angus Perthshire, Scotland, United Kingdom.[2] The couple had 7 children that are known of:

  1. John Macpherson Buttars, the eldest, born 1889-1936 Coupar Angus, Angus, Scotland, United Kingdom.
  2. William Moncur Buttars, born 1891-1952 Coupar Angus, Angus, Scotland, United Kingdom.[3]
  3. David Butters, born 1893-1961 Coupar Angus, Angus, Scotland, United KIngdom.
  4. Mary Macpherson Buttars, born 1896-1983 Coupar Angus, Angus, Scotland, United Kingdom.[4]
  5. Emma Buttars born 1898-1899 Coupar Angus, Perthshire, Scotland, United Kingdom. Emma died very young, she was only 11months old.
  6. Eva Christina Butters, born 1901-1983 Mains, Angus, Scotland, United Kingdom. [5]
  7. Robert Grant Buttar, born 1905-1987 Mains, Angus, Scotland, United Kingdom. [6]

John lived most of his life in Perthshire, Scotland. After he married the couple lived in Coupar Angus Perthshire, Scotland, United Kingdom. Coupar Angus is a small town in Perthshire which borders Angus. It was rich in agriculture,, as well as mills, saw mills, a tannery, just to name a few. During the 20th century the linen trade declined and the mills began to close, but industry remains. From what is known, and according to Census records, John's occupation in life, was a factory tenter.

In the 1881 Census (LDS) the family were living in George Street Coupar Angus, Forfar, Scotland, United Kingdom, and John was 20 years of age. His occupation was a Factory Tenter. Other family members in the household at the time of these census were, his mother, Mrs. Buttars and three of his siblings. Sarah was 15 years of age and her occupation was a domestic servant, William was 11 years of age and he was a school scholar, and James, who was 18 years of age and his occupation was a farm servant.

In the 1891 Census John and his family were living in Coupar Angus, Forfar, Scotland, United Kingdom, and John was 31 years of age and married to Emily Butchart Macpherson. Emily was 29 years old. John's occupation was a Factory Tenter. Other family members in the household at the time of these census were his son and brother. His son John was only two years old. His brother James was 29 years old and his occupation was a Traction Engine Driver.

In the 1901 Census the family were living in Balgray Place Strathmartine and Mains, Angus, Scotland, United Kingdom, and John was 41 years of age. His occupation was a Jute Loom Overseer. Other family members in the household at the time of these census were his wife Emily who was 37 years of age, and their five children. Four of the five children were attending school. John was twelve years old, William was 9 years old, David was 7 years old, and Mary was 5 years old. Eva was the youngest, and her age was recorded in these census as '0'.

In the 1911 Census John and his family had moved and were living in Clepington Rd Strathmartine and Mains Dundee, Scotland, United Kingdom, and John was 51 years of age. His occupation was Factory Tenter. Other family members in the household at the time of these census were, his wife Emily who was 49 years of age and their five children. John the eldest was 22 years old, and his occupation was a Clerk at Jute Works, William was 19 years old, and his occupation was a Fitter at an Iron Foundry, David was 17 years old, his occupation was a Dental Mechanic, Mary was 15 years old and she was a Clerkess, at a Merchant, and Eva was 10 years old and a School Scholar.

From the above Census, it appears that John's occupation in life did not change, although his place of residence did. From the period of 1901 until the time of his death, John and his family resided in Dundee, Scotland, United Kingdom.

In the years 1925 and 1930, according to Scotlandspeople, under the heading of "Valuation Rolls" the family were living as Tenant/Occupier, at 199 Clepington Rd Mains and Strathmartine, Dundee, Scotland, United Kingdom.[7]

He died on the 10 November 1934, at Dundee, Angus, Scotland, United Kingdom, and was buried at Abbey Church Graveyard Coupar Angus, Perthshire, Scotland, United Kingdom.[8]

Research Notes

There appears to be some discrepancy with regards to John's surname. His birth record shows his surname as Butter, however his marriage record has shown the spelling as Buttar, and the Census records of 1891 and 1911, the Valuation Rolls records and the record of his death have shown the surname to be Buttars. In the Census of 1901 his surname was recorded as Butters. Also, three of his siblings have their surname spelt 'Butters'. However, his father's birth/baptism record from Scotlandspeople shows 'Butter'...Old Parish Registers of Birth and Baptism, David Butter, Date: 21/10/1830, Parish Number: 349, Ref: 20 63, Parish Dunkeld, Scotland, United Kingdom. David died at 38 years of age, and the place of death is unknown. Maybe John's father, David, changed their name to Buttars? Or, is it a spelling error in the data of the records? The only birth records that were found of the children were for William Buttars his sister Mary Macpherson Buttars, Eva Butters and Robert Grant Buttar. The childrens surnames on their birth records are possibly spelling errors. There was a child named Emma Buttars who died very young. She was only 11 months old. Emma was born in 1898 and died in 1899. There was no mention of Robert Grant Buttars, son, in any of the above Census. Two sons travelled abroad, John Macpherson Buttars went to India and William Moncur Buttars, immigrated to the USA. A death/burial record was found of John Macpherson Buttars, who died on the 16 May, 1936 in Calcutta, India and was interred in Calcutta, India, however, he is on the burial headstone of his family in Abbey Church Graveyard Coupar Angus, Perthshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, and a death/burial record was found of William Moncur Buttars, son, who died in 1952 in Massachusetts, USA and was buried at Greenlawn Cemetery Nahant, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA. William is also on the family headstone in Abbey Church Graveyard Coupar Angus, Perthshire, Scotland, United Kingdom.
