Maud was born in Bishop Monkton, Yorkshire, England, in 1869. Her birth was registered in the second quarter in Ripon. She was the daughter of John Butterfield and Ann Stowell. She was enumerated in the 1871 census as a one year old residing with her parents and four siblings at Park House, Bishop Monkton. Her father was a "Paper Manufacturer". Her father died in 1872, her mother in 1875. Maud appeared in the 1881 census residing with her brother Frederic and sister Annie in Bishop Monkton. In 1891 she was living with her sister Mary Jane Renton and family at South Lands, Bishop Monkton.
Maud married William Knowles in 1894. The marriage was registered in the third quarter in Ripon. The couple would have three children between 1895 and 1901. Maud and William appeared in the 1901 and 1911 census residing in Halifax with their children.
William died in 1912. Maude married Thomas W. Sadler in 1930. The marriage was registered in the fourth quarter in Ripon. Maud was sixty one.
Maude passed away on May 8, 1937. Her residence at time of death was Fern House, Bishop Monkton. She was buried at St John the Baptist Churchyard, Bishop Monkton. Her Probate was administered on June 23, 1937 in London naming son Frederic William Knowles "Auctioneer".
