Ebenezer Butterfield was born at Chelmsford Massachusetts on July 13, 1707, son of Samuel and Rachel (Spalding) Butterfield. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Ebenezer Butterfield's name appears on the list of tax-payers in Dunstable in 1744, the date of the earliest tax records. [3] He was also a member of the church in 1757 with his wife, Alice, and served in the Continental army. [3]

He was enumerated at Dunstable in the 1790 U. S. Census, [5] and died about 1795. [3] He is thought to be buried in the Butterfield Cemetery, Farmington, Franklin, Maine. [6]

However, his will was written at Dunstable, Massachusetts on April 5, 1784, and submitted to the Court at Groton by his son Philip, executor, on April 25, 1796. In it he names:

  • beloved wife Mary
  • eldest son Ebenezer
  • sons Samuel, Jonas, ? Jesse, Philip
  • daughters Sarah Cummings, Mary Woods and Rachel Welor (sic)

His son Leonard submitted his approval/acceptance of his father's will to the court asking the court that the will be proved. And son Philip was approved as executor on April 21, 1797. [7]

Marriages

  1. He married before 1752, Alice Taylor, who was born on April 15, 1720, daughter of Abraham Taylor. [2] She died by 1767. [8]
  2. He married Sarah Houston of Dunstable, New Hampshire, intentions published on October 8, 1767. [8]
  3. In his will, he names his beloved wife Mary so he may have had a third wife. [7] ? Mary Herdy/Hardy.[8]

  1. Jesse born April 28, 1752; died at Farmington on February 6, 1842; married Lydia Blodgett, daughter of Josiah and Jemima Blodgett in 1780. [8] [4]
  2. Rachel born October 8, 1754 [4]; married Seth Wheeler, of New Ipswich, New Hampshire, son of Jonas and Persis (Brooks) Wheeler, in 1773. [8] [7] She died at New Ipswich in 1841. [9]
