Biography

John Henry was born in 1836. He was the son of John Butters and Margaret Groves. John was born in Canada but came to the US with his family and appears on the 1850 United States Census as a 14 year old. [1] John also appears on the New York State Census in 1855 with his parents and siblings. [2] They also appear on the 1860 Federal Census now in Buffalo, New York. [3]

John married Elizabeth Eiss in 1863. They moved to Chicago along with other of the siblings after their parents died. John and Elizabeth appear on the 1865 New York State Census with their two year old son George and son Alfred 0 years old. [4]

John and Elizabeth, still in Buffalo, New York, appear on the 1875 New York State Census with three sons, George, Alfred and Frank. The family has not been found on the 1870 US Census. [5]

In 1880 John and Elizabeth have four sons. John lists his occupation as a Fireworks Manufacturer. They live in Chicago, Illinois. [6] Still in Chicago in 1900, John is still in the fireworks manufacturing business, Elizabeth does not have an occupation. She says she has had seven children and four are now living. Their son Burt 23, is living in the household and he is a Barber. [7]

John Henry Butters passed away in 1916. [8]

Also, there is a FindAGrave memorial for John Henry Butters. He died 23 May 1916 and is buried in Graceland Cemetery in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.[9]
