Biography

John Butterworth was born about 1839 at Royton, Lancashire.

John Butterworth married Sarah Jane Hulton on 2 March 1868 at St Matthew’s Church, Chadderton, Lancashire. Their marriage certificate recorded John was a bachelor aged 28 and a labourer. His father was named as Thomas Butterworth, a cotton weaver. Sarah was a spinster aged 22 and a cotton reeler. Her father was named as Thomas Hulton, an engineer. At the time of their marriage John was living at Holden Fold, Royton and Sarah at Landsdown Rd, Chadderton. Their witnesses were John Shaw Burgess and Elizabeth Hulton, Sarah’s sister. Sarah signed with her mark.

Known children of this couple were Thomas born 1869, Sarah Ellen born 1870, Mary Alice born 1872, Mary Jane born 1877 and Henry born 1880.

All five children were baptised at St Matthew’s Church, Chadderton, Thomas on 8 August 1869, Sarah on 18 September 1870, Mary Alice on 28 July 1872, Mary Jane on 16 September 1877 and Henry on 3 October 1880. The family was living at Main Rd, when Thomas was baptised, at Featherstall Rd when Sarah and Mary Alice were baptised and at Middleton Rd when Mary Jane and Henry were baptised. John's occupation was variously shown as a mechanic, a planer and as a grocer. [Lancashire OnLine Parish Clerks]

Children Thomas and Mary Alice both died in childhood.

In the 1881 census the family was living at 495 Middleton Rd, Chadderton. John, aged 42, was a grocer. Sarah was aged 35. Children Sarah, Mary J and Henry were aged 10, 3 and 1 year respectively. [RG11/4086 60 Pg 26]

In 1891 the family was living at 56 Oxford St, Oldham. John, aged 51, was a machine maker and he also ran a baker's shop. Sarah, aged 44, was the baker. Children Sarah, Mary and Henry were aged 20, 13 and 11. [RG12-3304 14 Pg 21]

The family then moved to Blackpool, Lancashire.

Sarah Jane Butterworth died in 1901 at Blackpool aged 55 years.

In the 1901 census the family was living at 45 St Chad's St, Blackpool. John, aged 62, was running his own business as a landscape gardener from home. Daughter Sarah, aged 30, also had her own business run from home, as a company housekeeper. Henry, aged 21, was a saddler. Married daughter Mary and her husband William Corkhill [Corkill] and their two children were also living there. William, aged 25, was working for a corporation. Mary was aged 23 and their two sons John William and Henry were aged 2 years and 2 months respectively.

John Butterworth remarried to Jane Ibbotson on 15 December 1902 at the parish church, South Shore, Blackpool. Their marriage certificate recorded John was a widower aged 63 and a gardener. His father was named as Thomas Butterworth (deceased), a weaver. Jane was a widow aged 48 years. Her father was named as Andrew Forrester (deceased), a Lieutenant with the 15th Hassars. At the time of their marriage John was living at 45 St Chad's Rd, South Shore and Jane at 104 Severn St, Hull, Yorkshire. Their witnesses were Joseph Seel Fell and Esther Fell.

In the 1911 census most of the family were living at 18 Albert St, Blackpool. Henry Butterworth, aged 31, was a harness maker. His wife Edith was aged 29. Their four children Susan, Alice, Elizabeth and Nellie were aged 7, 5, 4 and 5 months respectively. Mary Corkill, aged 33, and her three children were also living there. John was aged 12, Sarah Jane was aged 6 and Ernest was aged 4. Henry's stepmother Jane Butterworth was aged 54. A visitor Herbert Pardoc, aged 9, was also there.

Sarah Ellen Butterworth, aged 40, was visiting her cousin Alice Ann Bailey nee Pass and family at 40 Horsedge St, Oldham.

Neither John Butterworth or William Corkill have been located in this census.

It is believed John Butterworth died in 1930 at Blackpool aged 89 years.
