George Butterworth M.C. is Notable.

George was born in 1885. He was the son of Sir Alexander Kaye Butterworth and his wife Julia Margaret Wigan. Soon after his birth, his family moved to York so that his father could take up an appointment as general manager of the North Eastern Railway, which was based there.

He went to prep school at Aysgarth School and then attended Eton College. He showed musical promise at Eton and went to Trinity College, Oxford, where he became more focused on music, becoming President of the University Music Club.

He began a career in music following leaving Trinity College, and became a respected composer and is best known for the orchestral idyll The Banks of Green Willow and his song settings of A. E. Housman's poems from A Shropshire Lad.

George Butterworth became friends with the folk song collector Cecil James Sharp (1859-1924); the composer and folk song enthusiast Ralph Vaughan Williams; the future Director of the Royal College of Music, Hugh Allen; and a baritone and future conductor, Adrian Boult. He travelled with Vaughan Williams collecting folk songs.

George served in World War One and was a Lieutenant in the Durham Light Infantry.

He passed away in 1916, having been killed in action in France. His death was due to him being shot by a sniper in the Battle of the Somme. He was 31 years old. George Butterworth was awarded the Military Cross.
