Biography

First Sergeant James Buttolph served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: August 25, 1862
Mustered out: April 7, 1864

James was born in 1830 in Canada. He was the son of Joel Buttolph and Sarah Smith. [1][2]

James and his brother David enlisted with the 74th Regiment, Illinois Infantry, Company B in August 1862. He was injured on May 17, 1864 at the Battle of Adairsville during the Atlanta Campaign. In October that year he was transferred to the 2nd Battalion, 34th Regiment. He mustered out April 7, 1865. [3][4][5][6]

In 1880 he is listed as a widower living in Sinn Sun River, Montana. [7][8]


James passed away in 1901 at the Montana Veterans Home in Montana. [9][10]
