Charles Butts was born in 1810 in Hancock County, Georgia, United States.
Charles (age 25) first married Louisa Johnson (age 15 in 1836 in Hancock County, Georgia. Their children were:
- Nancy Ann Butts Lott (1836-1890)
- Sarah A. Butts Floyd Pickett (1840-1924)
- Lydia L. Butts Bounds (1842-1870)
- Amanda Butts Davis (1844-1893)
- Phillip Adam Butts (1847-1907)
- Thomas Butts (1840-1860)
By 1850, Charles (age 38) had moved his family from Georgia to Barbour County, Alabama, where he would remain.[1]

Charles (age 48) secondly married Sarah Amy (Johnson) Fluornay (age 24) on April 1, 1858, in Barbour County, Alabama.[2] They had the following children:
- Rhoda Butts Cain (1860-1918)
- Charles Butts (b. 1861)
- Melissa G. Butts (b. 1863)
- Ludie Angeline P. Butts (b. 1864)
The 1860 Census showed Charles (age 46) with his new wife, Sarah, his 2 youngest surviving children (his son, Thomas died in 1860) from his first marriage to Louisa (Johnson) Butts and a newborn by his second wife, Sarah.[3]
