Joseph was born about 1820. In 1850, the family was in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, but they apparently relocated to Ohio shortly after that census. By June 1860, Joseph was a wheelwright, living with Christianne and three children in Knox County, Ohio. He valued his real estate at $200 and his personal estate at $50.[1] Joseph passed away in 1873 and is buried at Millwood Cemetery in Knox County, Ohio.[2]
In 1861, Joseph enlisted in Company K, 43rd Ohio Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, as a private. The company was mustered into service February 14, 1862, and left Mount Vernon (Knox County) for the front on February 21. There, they reported to Brigadier General John Pope, who commanded the district of Mississippi. In March 1862, the company was under fire at New Madrid, Missouri, at a high price of killed and wounded members. They were also active in battles in Tiptonville, Tennessee, and Iuka. The regiment participated in the "Grand Review" at Washington and was mustered out of service July 13, 1865. (For full details of their battles, see N. N. Hill's History of Knox County, Ohio (1881), pp 311+) [3]
