Elizabeth Ellen Buxton was the daughter of Thomas Fowell Buxton and Rachel Jane Gurney. She married Robert Barclay, son of Joseph Gurney Barclay and Mary Walker Leatham, on 12 February 1868 and had 8 children. She died on 20 September 1919.
Elizabeth Ellen (Buxton), daughter of Thomas Fowell Buxton and Rachel Jane Gurney, was born in West Ham, a suburb of London, Essex, England in the first quarter of the year 1848.
In the England and Wales Census of 1851 she was recorded as living in Leyton, an urban district of Essex, England, with her parents and siblings Rachel Louisia, John Henry, Fowell Arthur, grandmother Hanna Buxton and aunt Pricilla Johnstone. There were five servants in the household.
In the England and Wales Census of 1861 at the age of 13 she was living in Leyton with her parents and siblings John Henry, Arthur Fowell, Godfry Buxton, Alfred, and Margaret Jane. Annie Smith of Suffolk was their governess. There were nine servants in the household.
Her mother had roots in the Gurney banking family. She probably frequented gatherings of banking families. She eventually met and married Robert Barclay, a banker, in 1868 at the age of 20. He was the son of Joseph Gurney Barclay and Mary Walker Leatham. They eventually moved to Wanstead, a brickmaking urban district of Essex, England where they resided during the England and Wales 1871 census.
At some point before 1891, the Barclays moved to Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire. Hoddesdon was situated about 20 miles (32 km) north of London on the main road to Cambridge and to the north. The road forked in the centre of the town, with the present High Street dividing into Amwell Street and Burford Street, both leading north to Ware. From an early date there were a large number of inns lining the streets to serve the needs of travellers. Hoddesdon grew up as a coaching stop on the route between Cambridge and London.
Brewing was first established in the town in about 1700. In 1803, William Christie established a brewery in the town, and it became a major employer and one of the largest breweries in England.
In 1887 Lowfield in Hoddesdon hosted Queen Victoria's Jubilee celebrations, borough of Broxbourne of Hertfordshire, and no doubt the Barclays were present during this celebration. Indeed the England and Wales 1891 Census reflect Elizabeth Barclay resided at Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire. England, with her husband, Robert, and children Robert L., Mary D., Clemence K., David B., Joseph G., Gilbert A., Rachel E., and Cristina D. No servants or governess were listed in this census.
In the 1901 England and Wales Census we see an established family in the community of Urban Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, England. Elizabeth at 53 is there residing with husband, Robert, 57 and children Clemence age 26, Gilbert age 19, Rachel age 15 and 10 servants. Her nephew, Andrew Buxton, originally from London, is also listed in this census.
Elizabeth E. (Buxton) Barclay died in the third quarter of the year 1919 at the age of 71 in Ware, Hertfordshire, England.
At this time no exact day/month of birth and death can be established.
