Biography

Arvilla Buxton was born on December 11, 1808, in Smithfield, Rhode Island.

The entry of the marriage intentions records of Douglas on page 76 says, "Mr. Thomas Howland and Miss Arrilla Buxton both of Douglas, intend marriage entered with me this 4th day of May 1833. Samuel Balcome. Town Clerk."[1]

Arrilla Buxton married Thomas Howland on 26 May 1833, in Douglas, Massachusetts.[2]

They had two adopted children during their marriage as follows:

  1. William Walter Martin-Howland (1847 - 1923)
  2. Ellen Howland (1859)

In 1870, Arilda Howland, age 61, housekeeper, born in Rhode Island, was enumerated in the household of Thomas Howland, age 55, machinist, born in Massachusetts, and lived in Southbridge, Worcester County, Massachusetts. Also in his household were William Howland, age 23, weaving dealer, born in Florida, and Ellen Howland, age 11, born in New York.[3]

She died of old age on 4 May 1897, in Webster, Worcester County, Massachusetts, having lived a long life of 88 years, 4 months, and 23 days.[4]

She was buried at Mount Zion Cemetery in Webster, Worcester County, Massachusetts.[5]
