Philip Rudolph Buys was born in about 1833 in Uitenhage district, Cape Colony, and was the son of Stephanus Bernardus Buys and Johanna Sophia Adriana (born van den Berg). In his will (image 824 of 1372) Philip states that he was born on 31 Aug 1833. [1]

Marriage to Miss vd Berg

Philip Rudolph Buys married spinster Johanna Catrina Elizabeth van den Berg on 13 Sep 1857 at the residence of Mrs vd Berg, Baviaans Krantz, in the county of Weenen, in the Colony of Natal. Both bride and groom were of full age. Philip was residing at Vrisgewaagd at the time, whilst Johanna was residing at Baviaans Krantz. [2]

Children:

  1. Stephanus Bernardus[1]
  2. Isaak Matthys[1]
  3. Johanna Sophia Adriana[1]
  4. Cecilia Johanna[1]

According to Philip's probate documents, Johanna died on 14 Dec 1865. [1]

Marriage to Miss Pieterse

On 30 Apr 1866 32yr old widower Philippus Rudolphus Buys, married 21yr old Alieda Aletta Pieterse at the Dutch Reformed Church in Weenen, Weenen County, Natal. Both were residents of Weenen County [3]

Children:

  1. Philippus Rudolph[1]
  2. Frederick Jacobus[1]
  3. Johannes Lodewyk Jacob[1]
  4. Hendrik Samuel[1]
  5. Johannes Christoffel[1]
  6. Izaak Dirk[1]
  7. Mattheus Mathinus[1]

It appears that none of his daughters from his second wife are named on the probate document, son Johannes Petrus Buys (1877-bef.1900) likely died before his father and is also not mentioned in the probate.

Death

Philip Rudolph Buys died at age 67yrs 4mths at his residence Vrisgewaagd, Weenen on 26 Dec 1900.[1]. In his will, dated 22 Feb 1892, Philip states that he has four from his first wife and seven with Alieda. However on image 825 of 1372 Philip states that he has 17 children in total. He also mentions his brother Johannes Christoffel Buys, and that Johannes has a son named Isaac Johannes Matthys Buys (second son). It is also recorded in the will that Philip was born on 31 Aug 1833 in Uitenhage, and his current wife was born on 14 Jun 1845. The Death Notice is signed by his surviving wife AA Buys on 18 Dec 1911 at Weenen. [1] There are some major discrepancies between the Death Notice and the following pages contained in the Probate file. Please do view the next few pages in the attached source. Image 823 of 1372 gives a death date of 8 Dec 1899 (This is apparently according to the Certificate of death of the Register General). Philip died from heart failure, aged 66 years and 3 months. [4]

Research Notes

The Probate states that his mother was Johanna Sophia Adriana (born van den Berg), after conferring with other researchers we believe this to be an error. Cormac-6 07:37, 1 June 2021 (UTC)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Philippus by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Philippus:

Buys-443 and Buys-418 appear to represent the same person because: Hi, the daughter is clearly a duplicate (Johanna Sophia Adriana (Buys) Coetzee). We need to merge Philip then the daughter.
Buys-443 and Buys-418 do not represent the same person because: The two profiles do not represent the same person because two different specific years and dates of birth and death. I suspect a marital conflation (same spouse but one profile is incorrectly connected).
