He attendedschool at the Lower Five Mile School, then at Petersburg and latermoved to The Dalles. After graduation from high school he marriedMyrtle P. Byers on Dec. 5, 1925. He began his military career inThe Dalles in 1923 and served six weeks in the CMTC (Calvary Unit) atFort Lewis in Washington, and in 1923 joined the Oregon National GuardUnit Company H. When that was activated in 1924, he became an officerwith the company and commanded it from 1928 until 1932. At that timehe was transfered to the CCC Corps in Republic, Wash. and served withthat organization at several locations in Washington and Montana.In 1940 he was reassigned to the U.S. Air Force at Hamilton Field,having previously attended the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Ga.He graduated from the Air University at montgomery, Ala. afterattending various other military schools. He finished his careerafter 32 years in the military and retired on Feb. 28, 1967. Col.Wickman was a World War II veteran, serving overseas with the U.S. AirForce in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany in 1944-45. Hewon the Bronze Star, the Air medal, the Belgium Defense medal, "AlbertPrince of the Regants", and many campaign medals with accompanyingcombat stars. his service overseas was as an adminstrative executiveofficer with a P-30 Fighter Group, the 474 Group, and Ninth Air Forcehe was then promoted to personnel office with the 19th Tactical AirCommand and then to Colonel of the General Staff. After the war heserved with the Fourth Air Force in San Francisco and was InspectorGeneral. He was a past member of the Sojourners, hero's of 76 andwas past president of The Dalles Downtown Kiwanis Club. He is alsopast president of the Old Wasco County Pioneer Association and a lifemember of the Order of Travelers, the military branch of the MasonicLodge. He reached the sublime degree of Master Mason in 1927, laterbecoming a member of the York Rite bodies of Free Masonry and theCommandery and Order of mystic Shrine Al Kader Lodge of portland andthe Camel herders Shrine, Survivors include his wife, Myrtle;three daughters, Mrs. Mavis Jane Ruddell, The Dalles; Mrs. Shirley AnnAllen, Yakima, Wash; and Mrs. Evelyn Marie Wilkinson, Kansas City, Mo;five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, onegreat-great-grandughter and several cousins, nieces and nephews.Funeral services will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Spencer, Libby &Powell Funeral home in The Dalles. Funeral services will beSaturday at 2 p.m. at Smith Callaway Chapel, with interment followingat the IOOF cemetery.
