Biography

George Glover Bynum was born on his parents' farm in Blount County, Alabama, USA, in 1835. He was the son of Tapley Bynum (abt.1796-aft.1837) and Sinah Serena Glover (abt.1799-abt.1850).

On 22 July 1852 George G. Bynum married Catherine Reneau (1832-1919). [1] The couple lived and farmed in Blount County, Alabama, and had 7 known children (1 son & 6 daughters):

  1. Mary A Bynum, 1854–1895
  2. Margaret Louvisa Bynum, 1855–1930
  3. Nancy Cyrena Bynum, 1856–1898
  4. Artalissa Catherine (Bynum) Weston (1858-1935)
  5. William Tapley Bynum, 1860–1932
  6. Lina Adeline Bynum, 1862–Deceased
  7. Celia Isabell Bynum, 1866

George Glover Bynum enlisted as a Private in Company B, 28th Alabama Infantry, in the US Civil War. He was captured at the 1863 Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, and spent the remainder of the war at Camp Morton, Indiana. It's said that in March 1865, given the "horrors" of the POW camp, he accepted to join Co. "B" of the 6th US Volunteer Infantry (Union) and be shipped west to fight Indians. His last known posting was at Fort Kearney, Nebraska Territory, in March 1866. There he was reported as "AWOL" and then declared dead. His official death date is 1866 but some family sources say he fled back to Alabama and lived clandestinely after the war. [2]

There remains also the "mystery" of his youngest daughter: Ceclia Isabella Bynum, who was born in Oneanta, Blount, Alabama, in late 1866 or early 1867 (declared as 13 years old on 1880 US Census). She married and had children in Alabama. [3]

George's wife, Catherine (Reneau) Bynum (1832-1919), never remarried and continued to live on their farm in Oneanta, Blount Co., Alabama, until her death on 12 September 1919. She was buried at Old Liberty Cemetery, Oneonta, Blount County, Alabama, USA. She shares a gravestone plaque with her husband, created after her death, with both names and both birth/death years.
