Biography
Maria Byrd Carter was born January 6, 1727, a daughter of William Byrd II and Maria Taylor Byrd of Westover. [1] On September 22, 1742, at the age of 17, Maria married as his second wife, Landon Carter, a prominent member of the House of Burgesses, and builder of the plantation home, "Sabine Hall," where he died in 1778. [2]
Maria and Landon became the parents of one child, Maria Byrd Carter, born November 22, 1745. Maria died within a week of her daughter's birth, of complications of the puerperium of pregnancy. [3] After her death, her husband married Elizabeth Beale.
