Biography

Tobias was the son of Garret Byrne and Elizabeth Butler. In 1852, he was baptised at St John's RC Church at Kilkenny. His sponsors were John Farrell and Mary Butler.

He emigrated to Australia and settled in Queensland.

In 1875 he made an application for Publican of the One Mile Hotel on Gympie Road, Maryborough which was granted in January 1876 2. By November 1876 3 he requested to be relieved of his licence having had enough of the life there. In September 1881 4 Tobias opened a General Store on the corner of Queen & Forts Streets, Maryborough selling general wares, drapery and oilmen's stores. The store was put up for sale in October 1882 5.

Tobias worked as a Miner, making application twice for mineral leases. Things didn't go well for Tobias and in 1890 8 the property he jointly owned with Thomas O'Neill was put up for auction unless payment was made for their debt. In 1891 Tobias was declared insolvent 7.

He made application to mine the Chance Line in 1902.

He was named as one of 50 Mining Assessors in 1907.

Elizabeth Egan, known as Lizzie, became his wife in 1892. They had 3 children born during the marriage, Tobias James, Mary Elizabeth and Francis Patrick. Tobias James 1 attended Christian Brothers Grammar School at Charters Towers.

Tobias and Elizabeth moved to Charters Towers and in the early 1900's Tobias was employed as a Cyandier at one of the Gold Mines. (Cyanider - process of separating the gold from waste material)

Son, Francis Patrick was to enlist in 1916 WWI 29th Coy AS Corps. 2. His youngest son Tobias James became a Grocer and lived in Charters Towers. 3

Tobias Byrne died in 1921 6 age 69 at Charters Towers. His funeral was held at St Columba's RC Church. Tobias Byrne was buried at Charters Towers Monumental & Lawn Cemetery. PLOT LYND. SECTION 42, PLOT 25, GRAVE# 6308.[1]
