"Mary Byrne, who became the wife of William Davies from Pontypool, was born on 29th April 1837, in the City of Kilkenny, the only daughter of a cordial manufacturer, Patrick Byrne, and his wife Bridget (nee Tynan or Tyner). "One of the Kilkenny Cats," she used to describe herself. When she was only 9 years of age, the tragic cholera epidemic of the 1840's in which she lost her mother, completely changed the pattern of her life, and ultimately was the reason for her emigration. Over and over again, she told us the story of her mother's death, which event had made a very deep impression on the child: she had three of four brothers, but she alone of the family was permitted to visit her mother's deathbed. "Girls in Ireland were considered to be of less consequence than boys," she used to say, and if she caught the infection, her loss would be of less importance than that of any of her brothers! The risk apparently did her no harm, for she lived to a ripe old age and bore eleven children. " Page 11. 'One Foot in Tipperary: Davies family history 1784 -1975' by Ellen Constance Davies.
