Obituary

Our Bungendore correspondent writes under date 1st September:—It is with the deepest regret I have to announce that one of our most esteemed townsmen, Mr. Patrick Joseph Byrne, died at his residence this afternoon after a long and painful illness extending over some five years. The main cause of death, I understand, was Bright's disease. The deceased was an old resident, and of late years had carried on a most successful business as auctioneer and commission agent. He always took great interest in sports of all sorts, and in his day was one of our best cricketers and footballers. He was for a long time a resident of Collector, at which place he was born. The deceased gentleman, who leaves a widow and grown-up family, was held in the highest esteem by his large circle of acquaintances. He was a loving and devoted father and husband, and the deepest sympathy is extended to Mrs. Byrne and family by their numerous relatives and friends.[7]

Extract from Book

Ellen Gertrude Hannan, daughter of John and Ellen, was born at Mutbilly in 1863. In 1886 she married Patrick Byrne at St Brigid's Church, Mutbilly. Patrick was born in 1857 at Lake George, near Collector, son of Patrick Byrne and Mary Carey, married at Goulburn in 1851. In 1872 Patrick Byrne senior was listed in Greville's Directory as a farmer, living at Collector, about 10 miles (16 kilometres) south of Mutbilly. There were 82 families registered with the Post Town Collector on Greville's Directory. Constables William Cade and John O'Brien were stationed at Collector in 1872. In January 1865, only a month before the wounding of Constable Wiles at Mutbilly, Constable Samuel Nelson, stationed at Collector, had been killed by John Dunn, the notorious bushranger. Below is the citation from "Police Deaths in NSW 1788 to 1996":

NELSON, Samuel
Constable
26 January, 1865
Shortly before 6pm on 26 January, 1865 bushrangers Hall, Dunn and Gilbert attacked Kimberley's Inn at Collector. The local Police at the time were out searching the area for the bushrangers, and the only man on duty in town was the Lockup keeper, Constable Nelson. When news of the attack reached the Constable he remarked to his wife that he would simply "have to do his best" against the bushrangers. Approaching the hotel armed only with a Police carbine with bayonet attached, the Constable was shot by Dunn who had hidden behind a fence post. Nelson was initially hit in the chest by a shotgun blast, and as he staggered, Dunn fired again, hitting him in the face. He died almost instantly. The bushrangers then robbed the Constable's body of his personal belongings and the carbine, and escaped into the bush. The entire incident had been witnessed by one of the Constable's nine children, young Frederick Nelson, who was also fired upon by Dunn.
The Constable was born in 1823 and joined the New South Wales Police Force on 5 August, 1857. At the time of his death, he was stationed at Collector.

Of Ellen's and Patrick's seven children Mary was born at Collector in 1887; and John, Mabel, Eva, Frank, Callista and Christine were born between 1889 and 1900 at Bungendore, a village located about 34 miles (55 kilometres) south of Collector, at the southern end of Lake George. In 1872 there were 49 families registered at the Post Town of Bungendore. Patrick died in 1915 and is buried at Bungendore. After Patrick's death, the Byrne family moved to Sydney. Ellen died in 1948 and is buried at Macquarie Park Cemetery in Sydney, formerly known as Northern Suburbs Cemetery. Of Ellen's and Patrick's children Mary, Mabel, Frank and Callista are buried in Macquarie Park Cemetery; Chris is buried in Woronora Cemetery in Sydney; John, who died as a child, is buried at Bungendore; and Eva is buried in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory (ACT).[8]
