I was born on November 2, 1910 in Voth, TX (now part of Beaumont). I was named Mattie Marie Bythewood. Mattie was for my grandmother Bythewood, Marie for my Mother's older sister.
I was told I resembled my gather. My brothers nad sisters' names were Vernah, Grace, Robert, Willis and Altie Lee (Beebe).
My family lived in Voth until I was 8 yrs old. Then we moved to Morgan City, LA. I went to school Voth, Morgan City, University of Southwest Louisiana in Lafayette, La 1928-31. As a student I liked Botany and Home Economics. My ambition was to become a Home Economics teacher.
At home I was expected to always make desserts and candy for the family and to trim the Christmas Tree.
My parents were very strict about where I went adn with whom. Everyone had to go to bed by 9:00 PM/

Marie Bythewood Van Norman, 97, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2008, in Baton Rouge. She was born Nov. 2, 1910, in Voth, Texas, and moved to Morgan City as a child. She attended SLI in Lafayette and moved to Lake Charles in 1934. Marie taught home economics at LaGrange High and Westlake High School. Marie was an accomplished wife, mother and grandmother skilled in all aspects of home and hearth. She was an avid seamstress, loved needlepoint and specialized in making intricate decorations for the holidays. Marie loved to cook and bake and to set a beautiful table. She was always happiest when perfecting her warm home for her family to enjoy. Survivors include a daughter, Anna Marie Van Norman, of Baton Rouge; two sons, Russell Howard Van Norman Jr. and his wife, Carolyn Hardy Van Norman, of River Ridge, and Ted Craig Van Norman and his wife, Zee Ferchaud Van Norman, of New Orleans; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Marie was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Howard Van Norman Sr., a Lake Charles attorney who served his country in World War II and earned a Bronze Star. The Van Norman family would like to express its gratitude to all of Marie's caregivers who eased her through the final stages of her life. Your care and compassion are deeply appreciated. Service at Hixson Funeral Home, 3001 Ryan St., in Lake Charles, on Saturday, Aug. 16, at 2 p.m., with the interment following in Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery, also in Lake Charles. Visitation will be held from noon until service time Saturday.
