François was born about 1532. He was the eldest son of Jean de Bethune and his first wife Anne de Melun. He converted to Protestantism and was a loyal supporter of Louis de Bourbon, Prince de Condé, throughout the Wars of Religion, in which he was taken prisoner by the Catholics at Jarnac in 1569 but emerged unharmed. He passed away in 1575.
