In 1845 he sold his plantation home. It is believed he did so because of the economic stress following the Panic of 1837. Alice died the following year, in 1846, at the home of her sister-in-law, Sarah S Carrington, wife of Walter's brother William. She is buried at the Coles - Carrington - Mildendo Cemetery.
