Biography

Joel was born in 1799. He passed away in 1870.

From the Minutes of the Philadelphia Northern District Monthly Meeting:
"To the Monthly Meeting of Friends of Philadelphia, North America
"Dear Friends,
"Joel Cadbury, a member of this Meeting, son of Richard & Elizabeth Cadbury, being about to leave this his native country, & to reside amongst you under the care of his near relations, these may inform you that he is a youth of innocent conduct, and with desires for his preservation & establishment in the truth, we remain your affectionate friends
"Signed in ?? behalf of the North Monthly Meeting of Warwickshire in England, held at Hartshill the 9th day of 8th month 1815, by Sam. Lloyd George Boone Joseph Fowler P.M. James James Pearson Benjamin Evans Junr. Clerk.[1]

"At an adjourned Monthly Meeting held the 25th of 11 month 1815 [November 25, 1815].
"A Certificate from Burlington Monthly Meeting recommending John Lewis; and one from the North Monthly Meeting of Warwickshire in England held at Hartshill recommending Joel Cadbury were read and accepted - to visit them, Thomas Stewardson and Edwin A. Atlee are appointed."[2]

Joel filed his Declaration of Intent to become a US citizenship on January 11, 1821, in Philadelphia. He became a citizen on October 3, 1832.[3]

On October 24, 1822, Joel was disowned by the Philadelphia monthly Meeting for marrying his first cousin, contrary to discipline.[4] The first cousin was Caroline Warder.

On May 30, 1833, Joel was restored as a member of the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting.[5]

In 1850, Joel Cadbury, a 50 year old merchant, lived with his wife Caroline, 47, and seven children: Mary Ann, 26; Elizabeth, 21; Caroline W., 15; Joel, 11; William W., 18; John W., 13; Sarah, 9; and Emma, 7. All were born in Pennsylvania except the father, Joel, who was born in England.[6]

Death and Burial

Joel Cadbury, a 70 year old widower b. England, a retired dry goods merchant, died in March 1870 of debility and old age.[7] He is buried at the Friends Southwestern Burial Ground, Upper Darby, Delaware, Pennsylvania, USA[8]
