The origins of William Caddell (1668 - 1728) are mysterious. It is believe that his surname may suggest an origin from the north of Scotland, perhaps from Cawdor, but, no record of birth has yet been found. [1]
The first known record of him is in Haddington, East Lothian, in 1701 when he worked as a journeyman glazier for James Hog(g), a burgess of Haddington. On 13 July 1701, William Caddell married James Hogg's daughter Anna and they had seven children, three of whom died young. William became a freeman of the town on 26 June 1704. William Caddell became a freeman of the town of Haddington on 26 June 1704. By the time he died, aged 59, on 20 May 1728, he was described as a "merchant". William Caddell is buried in Saint Mary's Church yard in Haddington. [1]
The Caddell (later Cadel) family prospered due to their various industrial ventures in East Lothian. They established a family seat at Cockenzie, on the southern shore of the Forth estuary some 10 miles east of Edinburgh. [1]
