Biography

Michael Caddy was baptized in Cury,[1] Cornwall, on 7 March 1773. The names of his parents were Henry John and Elizabeth.[2]

The parents were Henry John Caddy (the elder) and his second wife, Elizabeth Webber, who had married in Cury on 28 October 1771. It was not recorded whether Elizabeth was a spinster or a widow. The officiating minister recorded Elizabeth's surname as "Weber", but she herself signed "Webber".[3]

Henry John's first wife, Rachel Thomas, had died about five months earlier. She was buried in Cury on 24 May 1771,[4] having married Henry Caddy in Cury on 8 January 1760.[5]

Michael Caddy, our subject, had two elder half-siblings. Grace, daughter of Henry and Rachel Caddy, was baptized in Cury on 26 December 1760,[6] and Henry John, son of Henry John and Rachel Caddy, was baptized in Cury on 13 January 1765.[7]

It is likely that Michael's mother was the Elizabeth Caddy of Gunwalloe who was buried in Cury on 13 October 1794.[8] About five months later Henry John Caddy married again: Henry John Caddy of Gunwalloe, yeoman, and Jane Oates, spinster, also of Gunwalloe, were married by licence in Gunwalloe on 7 March 1795.[9]

Michael Caddy married Elizabeth Hendy in the parish of Gunwalloe[10] (adjacent to Cury) on 5 September 1795. The marriage record describes the groom Michael Caddy as a yeoman of Gunwalloe; the bride was a spinster, also of Gunwalloe. The marriage was by banns, which were published on 27 September and on 4 October and 11 October. The service was conducted by curate Thomas Trevethan, and the marriage witnesses were James Hendy and Henry Caddy.[11]

Since Michael's father and his half-brother were both named Henry, it is not initially clear which one was the marriage witness. But perhaps the issue can be decided by comparing the witness's signature with other Henry Caddy signatures on marriage records from Cury and Gunwalloe.

Michael's father was married three times: to Rachel Thomas in 1760,[5] to Elizabeth Weber in 1771,[3] and to Jane Oates in 1795.[9] He signed "Henry Caddy" each time, and his signature seems to have become less fluent as he got older. He was also surely the Henry Caddy who witnessed the marriage of his daughter Grace to William Freeman in Gunwalloe on 14 December 1784.[12]

Michael's half-brother, Henry John Caddy (the younger) married Eleanor Boaden in Cury on 29 August 1785.[13] He signed "Henry John Caddy" in a fluent looking hand.

From the signatures, it seems most likely that the witness to Michael's marriage was his father rather than his half-brother. And in fact it is also distinctly possible that the younger Henry John Caddy had died in the early 1790s, before Michael was married. Three children of Henry John and Eleanor were born in the five years after their marriage, but the family then stopped expanding, and Eleanor Caddy, a widow, remarried in 1799.

Michael and his wife Elizabeth had six children:

  • James Caddy was baptized in Cury on 10 April 1796;[14]
  • Henry Caddy was baptized in Cury on 18 March 1798;[15]
  • Elizabeth Caddy was baptized in Cury on 12 April 1801;[16]
  • William Caddy was baptized in Cury on 30 Otober 1803;[17]
  • Grace Caddy was baptized in Cury on 22 June 1806;[18]
  • Michael Caddy was baptized in Gunwalloe on 18 September 1808.[19]

Michael Caddy of Cheverloe, aged 58, was buried in Gunwalloe on 6 October 1831.[20]

Note that Michael's recorded age at death fits perfectly with the date of his baptism, given that it was usual in Cornwall in those days for children to be baptized when no more than a few weeks old.

Elizabeth Caddy of Chivarloe, aged 68, was buried in Gunwalloe on 26 April 1843.[21]

"Chyvarloe" is now the standard spelling for the place where James and Elizabeth lived. It is in the northern part of Gunwalloe parish, about four kilometres south of Helston[22] and about three kilometres north of Gunwalloe Church.‍[23][24]

An 1841 census record shows an Elizabeth Caddy, age in the range from 65 to 69, living at Chyvarloe in the household of a farmer named Joseph Caddy, whose age was in the range from 25 to 29. There were two other people in the household, a servant and a labourer, both named Hocking.‍[25][26] It seems likely that Joseph was another son of Michael and Elizabeth, perhaps born in 1811 or 1812, but no record of his birth or baptism has yet been found.
