Joseph Cadotte was born on 15 September 1807, probably at La Pointe on Madeline Island in what is now Wisconsin. His parents were the Metis fur trader Michel Cadotte Sr. and his Anishinaabe wife Ikwesewe (or Madeline).[1] He was later baptized at St. Anne's Church at Mackinac on 30 July 1834. Joseph worked as a voyageur and fur trader, living at La Pointe until around 1838, when he relocated to Green Bay. He married a Metis Odawa (Ottawa) woman named Sophia or Otawakwe (literally, Otawa Woman). They had at least four children together: Michel (6 Feb 1836-), Joseph Stephen (Etienne) (20 February 1838-), Marie (1844-), and John (1848-).[2]
