Biography

Elsie, the eldest child of John Cadwallader and Frances "Fannie" Krall,[1][2] was born 11 August 1869 in Wellsville, Warrington Township, York County, Pennsylvania.[1][2] She spent her early years there on the family farm, where in 1870 the household included her parents John (age 25) and Frances Cadwallader (27), Elsie (1) and their housekeeper Margaret Krall (60), who is possibly a cousin.[3]

She is not living with her parents in 1880,[4] when she would have been 11 years old. The family seems to have experienced some economic hardship that caused them to leave their farm[4]—possibly due to the Panic and following Long Depression of 1873.[5] Elsie may have been hired out as a servant or sent to live with other relations. But nothing can be known with certainty until the 1880 census is found for her.

In 1900, Elsie (age 30) reappears as a milliner in Grant District, Preston County, West Virginia, living with her uncle Hiram R. (58, merchant) and aunt Augusta (Cadwallader) Mitchell (58).[6] Others in the household included her cousins Edward (24, farmer), Ralph (21) and Aubrie Mitchell (16), and her uncle's unmarried sister Ella Mitchell (55, seamstress).[6]

On the following census, she is living with her sister Augusta Ethel "Gussie" Prowell (age 39), the widowed owner of a general store, while Elsie (40) continued as a milliner working from home in Warrington Township.[7] The only other member of the household was a hired servant, Helen A. Lenker (13).

On 15 September 1910 in Glade Farms, Preston County, West Virginia, at age 40, Elsie married A. Ross Cuppett,[8] son of Alpheus Marion Cuppett and Elizabeth Ann Harned. They had no children. Unfortunately, he died in 1915.[9]

The widow Cuppett (age 50) returned to Wellsville to live with her sisters Gussie (47) and Mary Elizabeth "Bessie" Cadwallader (43, school teacher). At that time the former milliner is a private-duty nurse.[10] In 1920 Gussie was an innkeeper hosting the following additional residents: Helen A. Lenker (23, former maid, now lodger and shoe factory worker), Marie G. Stambaugh (17, inn servant), Alice S. Lewis (45, fore lady in shoe factory), Clark March (24, stock dealer) and Edward Jacobs (19, factory truck chauffeur).

On 21 August 1929 at the home of Ed Michel's in Preston County, West Virginia, Elsie (age 58) remarried to Lee Allen Smith (age 57),[11] son of Samuel "Harrison" Smith and Martha F. Forquer.[12] Because Lee and Elsie married late in life, they had no offspring.

Lee was a mailman of some means: In 1930, their home in Riverside, Monongalia County, West Virginia, shared with his sisters Daisy (age 48, an invalid) and Lillian (40, a church secretary), was valued at $30,000[13]—about $460,900 in 2019.[14] By 1940, Lee (age 67) had retired and lived peacefully with his wife Elsie (70) and maiden sisters Daisy (60) and Lillian M. (58, church secretary).[15] The record shows that Lee had completed four years of college and Elsie finished eight years of schooling, as had Lillian.[15]

Elsie's life, which paints a picture of an intelligent, vibrant, independent-minded, highly adaptable and caring woman, ended 9 February 1948 in Morgantown, Monongalia County, when Elsie died of a cerebral hemorrhage.[1] She was buried in the Mausoleum at East Oak Grove Cemetery in Morgantown.[1][16] Her husband outlived her more than a decade, but is also buried there.[17]

Research Notes

  • Birth Year: While her death record and Mennonite church records have the date shown above (11 August 1869), the 1900 census shows August 1870. Her parents were married 31 years in the 1900 census, which puts their marriage in 1868 or 1869.
