Note: by Andrea Powell The following is from Le Roy Linn's book [1] When Wales started using surnames, the name Cadwal(l)ader was always a given name or first name, and it was not used as a surname until after the immigrants landed in America. Mothers in Wales often named their sons Cadwal(l)ader in honor of King Cadwaladr just as they named sons Arthur after the fabled King Arthur of ancient Welsh fame. That is the reason it is practically impossible to trace the Cadwal(l)ader lineage back in Wales with any certainty.
Lynn continues, stating the early Pennsylvania Cadwallader lines were ... from four heads of families who came to Philadelphia. All four were Friends [Quakers], all four had well defined descendants, all four admitted relationship, and may have been cousins:
  • This John Calwallader of Horsham (Pennsylvania); from Montgomeryshire, Wales; later removed to Warminster
  • Not to be confused with: John Cadwalader of Philadelphia, from Bala, Merionethshire, Wales
  • Not to be confused with: John Cadwalader of Radnor (Pennsylvania); from Radnorshire, Wales
  • Associated with: Robert Cadwallader who's descendants carry the surname Roberts; from Bala, Merionethshire, Wales

So, I looked into John Cadwallader a long time ago, and may be misremembering, but I recall that there were two unrelated John Cadwallader (since the names are patronymic, not surprising) and Jr was just the younger one. Also had John whose son Jacob married Magdalene Cunrads/Kunders as the son of Cadwallader Evans. There definitely were at least two John C's who were not father and son in Pennsylvania in the 17th C.

Cadwallader-78 and Cadwallader-59 are not ready to be merged because: I believe the parentage needs to be sorted out and then he can be merged.
