Descendants of Nicholas Cady

The book Descendants of Nicholas Cady, published in 1910, includes an entry for Orrin Cady (Nelson Cady's father) that gives information about Nelson Cady's birth. [1]

Orrin Cady ... b. March 2, 1794 ; m. March 2, 1820, Beulah Stebbins, b. Butternuts, N. Y., Dec. 16, 1797, d. Guilford, N. Y., Feb 15, 1837. He m. (2) Oct 10, [1841], Paulina A. Beardsley, b. Norwich, N. Y., July 12, 1812, d. Binghampton, N. Y., June 1885 ; he d. there April 9, 1871. In their early life they lived in Butternuts, N. Y., where their first child was born. Later they settled in Guilford, N. Y., where other children were born.

An entry in a book of records of Guilford Center Presbyterian Church in Chenango County, New York, shows the family of Orin & Beulah Cady and their children: Georg, Nelson, Frances, Catharine, Almira. The household is numbered 88 on a page near the end of the book. [3]

Marriage

The newspaper Binghamton Courier (of Binghamton, New York) on 2 September 1846 published an item in the first column of page 3 showing the marriage on 30 August 1846 of Nelson Cady and Hannah Rogers in the village of Maine, New York, by the Rev. W. Gates. [4]

MARRIED: | In Maine Village, on the 30th ult., by the Rev. W. Gates, Mr. NELSON CADY to Miss HANNAH ROGERS, all of the above place.

A deed in Broome County, New York, dated 11 September 1854 shows Nelson Cady and Hannah his wife selling land to Orrin Cady of Chenango, Broome County, New York, for $600. The land was located in division 30 of the Boston Purchase. [14]

Land Grant

A land grant from the General Land Office, dated 15 December 1854, shows that Nelson Cady was granted 160 acres in Section 33 of Township 12, Range 4 in Bad Ax County (present-day Vernon County), Wisconsin. The land was described as the east half of the northeast quarter and the north half of the southeast quarter of Section 33. [15]

1855 Census

The 1855 Wisconsin state census shows the household of Nelson Cady listed in Viroqua, Bad Ax County (present-day Vernon County), Wisconsin. In the household were two males and two females. [16]

History of Vernon County

The book History of Vernon County, published in 1884, mentions Nelson Cady on pages 141, 525, and 774. The earliest mention of him in the book is in 1857, when he was a member of the board of supervisors of the county and associated with the town of Franklin (formerly "Lock Haven"). The last mention of him in 1863 describes Andrew Thompson purchasing 140 acres of farmland from Nelson Cady. [17]

Newspapers

An item printed several times in the Vernon County Censor, 1856–58 advertised the services of N. Cady. [18]

An item printed several times in 1858 in the Vernon County Censor announced a sheriff's sale of land belonging to Nelson Cady. [19]

SHERIFF SALE. | By virtue of an execution issued out of the Circuit Court of Badax County, Wisconsin against the goods and chattels, lands and tenements, of Nelson Cady, and to me delivered and directed. I have seized and levied on all the right title and interest that the said Nelson Cady had, on the 23d day of April 1858, or which he may have since acquired, of, in and to the N.W. qr of the S.W. qr of sec thirty-four (34) Town twelve (12) range four west (4): all of which I will offer for sale at public auction to the highest bidder, in cash, at the Court House in Viroqua, Badax County Wisconsin, on the 28th day of August 1858, between the hours of nine and eleven o'clock A.M. — Wm. P. Clark, Sh'ff.

1860 Census

The 1860 census shows the household of Nelson Cady listed in Franklin Township, Bad Ax County, Wisconsin. [20]

Further research shows that in the same county in the 1860 census were the Hanchett and Powers families who had also migrated from Broome County, New York. The Hanchetts were Hannah's mother's half-sister's family. Very likely the Hanchett and Cady families traveled together from New York to Wisconsin.

Obituary of Father-in-Law

The North Western Times of Viroqua, Wisconsin, dated 19 March 1862 includes an obituary for Noah Rogers. [21]

At Liberty Pole, March 7, Father Noah Rogers, aged 90 years and 8 [months]. Father Rogers was born in Branford, Conn., in the year 1771. In 1799 he moved to Lisle, Broome county, New York, which was then an almost unbroken wilderness, where he [resided until] 1854, when he came to this place [where] he has since lived, and where he is [now] at rest. In early life, he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Phipps, by whom he had a large family of children, who survive him to mourn the loss of an affectionate father. Although he made no parade of his religion, he has left [?] evidence that his end was [peaceful?]. The funeral services were attended at the residence of his son-in-law, March [?] Rev. Mr. Nuzum preaching from [the text?] “Let me be the death of the righteous (Numbers xxiii, 10) …

Gravestones

A small family cemetery in Liberty Pole, Vernon County, Wisconsin, contains two gravestones. A fragmented gravestone is inscribed with the name Noah Rogers. Another worn gravestone is apparently a memorial for young Carl Cady, son of Nelson and Hannah Cady. The gravestones are located at approx. 43.48697°,-90.91463°. [22]

Deed

A deed in Broome County, New York, dated 19 May 1862 shows Nancy Hine (of Maine, Broome County, New York) Emeline Congdon (of Maine, Broome County, New York), Orrin Rogers (of Boston, Town of Townsend, Norfolk County, Canada West) and Hannah T. Cady (of Franklin, Bad Axe County, Wisconsin) selling for $500 a parcel of land lying in the town of Nanticoke, Broome County, New York. The land occupied part of Lot 233 of the Boston Purchase. The deed indicates that the land had once belonged to Sarah Rogers, deceased. [23]

1865 Census

The 1865 New Jersey state census shows the household of Nelson Cady in Landis Township, Cumberland County, New Jersey. The household included one male adult, one female adult, one male child, one female child. [25]

The 1865 New Jersey state census also shows the households of the Hanchett and Powers families who were formerly in Wisconsin in 1860.

Map of Vineland

A map called "Map of the settled parts of the Vineland tract," published in 1867 shows the name "Cady" on a 25-acre property bordered by Wheat Road to the north and Valley Road (present-day Valley Avenue) to the east (location approx. 39.509°,-75.007°). Properties labeled Hanchett and Powers are located four blocks west on Wheat Road. [26]

Marriage Record of Daughter

A marriage record in Cumberland County, New Jersey, shows the marriage in Vineland on 25 December 1869 of William J. Arrow, son of William Arrow, farmer, and Mary. A. Arrow, and Fannie M. Cady, daughter of Nelson Cady, blacksmith, and Hannah T. Cady. [27] [28]

1870 Census

The 1870 census shows the household of Nelson Cady listed in Landis Township, Cumberland County, New Jersey. [29]

Death Record of Daughter

A death record in Cumberland County, New Jersey shows the death in Vineland on 12 September 1873 of Fanny M. Arrow, 25, daughter of Nelson and Hannah Cady. The record indicates that the cause of death was consumption. [30]

Freemason Record

An entry in the annual proceedings of the Freemasons (published in 1874) in New Jersey lists Nelson Cady as an officer, a J. D. [Junior Deacon], in the Vineland lodge. [31]

Binghamton Directory

Boyd's Binghamton City directory, 1873, shows a listing for Cady, Nelson, blacksmith, Main, house Thorp, near Edward. Perhaps this means his blacksmith business was on Main, and his house was near the intersection of Thorp Street and Edwards Street (at approx. 42.1035,-75.9252°). [32]

The 1875 New York state census shows the household (divided between two facing pages) of Nelson Cady listed in Binghamton, Broome County, New York. [33]

1880 Census

The 1880 census shows the household of Nelson Cady listed in Binghamton, Broome County, New York. The record seems to show that they lived at 64 Oak Street (or 64 Front Street?) in Binghamton (at approx. 42.096°,-75.92°). [34]

Disappearance of Son

The Troy Daily News dated 22 November 1883 reported on the disappearance of Arthur Cady. [35]

Arthur Cady, the treasurer of the cigar makers’ union, who disappeared with $450 of the union’s money, cannot be found, although efforts have been made.

The Utica Daily Observer dated 26 November 1883 reported that Arthur Cady had absconded with funds from the Cigarmakers' Union. [36]

Otsego County. SCHENRVUS' DEFAULTER. Arthur Cady, Treasurer of the Cigarmakers' Union at Schenevus, has absconded with $460.58 of the Union's money.

The Otsego Republican dated 28 November 1883 reported that Arthur Cady had absconded with funds from the Cigarmakers' Union and had disappeared. [37]

Arthur Cady, a young man who has worked at cigar making the past two years and who occupied the position of treasurer of the local Union, has absconded with the sum of $460.58. Cady is a bright appearing young man and had won the confidence of his fellow workmen by his apparent exemplary conduct. He disappeared about three weeks ago, and as he did not return, an examination of his books revealed the defalcation. Notices have been sent to every Union in this country and Canada and his apprehension is therefore but a question of time.

The Otsego Journal dated 28 November 1883 also reported the theft. [38]

Arthur Cady, a cigar maker, of Schevenus, and treasurer of the cigar maker's union in that place, has absconded with $460.58. Notices of his defalcation have been sent to every union in the United States and Canada, and his apprehension is regarded a certain.

Veteran Records

An 1890 veterans schedule has a listing for Nelson Cady of Norwich, New York. The schedule indicates that he was a private in the Civil War from October 1864 through December 1864 (length of service: 1 month, 15 days). A note explains "Not assigned to a Regt on account of disability." [39]

A veterans record, date uncertain, shows Nelson Cady, age 53, a blacksmith living in Norwich, New York. (It incorrectly gives his birthplace as NY City.) The record indicates that he entered service on 21 September 1862 and that he mustered as a blacksmith and was never assigned any regiment. [40]

Newspapers

The Otsego Journal dated 27 April 1893 includes an item about Nelson Cady's begonia. [41]

Nelson Cady, who resides upon Cortland street has a begonia which is as wonderful for its size as it is beautiful in appearance and prolific in blossoms. The flower fills an entire window, its main stalk growing up from the roots to the heighth of the window and thence gracefully bending half way back again. All winter this plant has been loaded with its delicate pink blossoms. There are now upon it upwards of fifty-six large clusters. The plant lights up the window like a bit of summer and needs to be seen to be appreciated or imagined.

The Otsego Journal dated 4 January 1894 includes the following: Mr. and Mrs. George Cady of Gilbertsville spent Christmas with his brother, Nelson Cady, on Cortland Street. They had not spent Christmas together in fifty-seven years. [42]

Death of Wife

The Otsego Journal dated 31 December 1896 reported the death of Hannah T. Cady. [43]

DIED | CADY—In Norwich, December 23, 1896, Hannah T., wife of Nelson Cady, aged 74 years.

The Evening Journal, Vineland, New Jersey, dated 20 January 1897 also reported her death. [44]

Wednesday, December 23, the death of Mrs. Hannah T. Cady occurred at Norwich, N. Y. Mr. and Mrs. Cady were residents of this town from 1865 to 1876, Mr. Cady being at one time a partner of the late E. H. Pierson in the blacksmith business.

1900 Census

The 1900 census shows that Nelson Cady was living in the Masonic Home in Utica, Oneida County, New York. The record indicates that he was born in February 1825, was 75 years old, was widowed, was born in New York to a father born in Connecticut and a mother born in New York. [45]

Reports of Death

The Utica Saturday Globe dated 27 January 1906 includes an obituary for Nelson Cady. [46]

Norwich, Jan. 26,- At the Masonic Home in Utica, Monday, occurred the death of Nelson Cady, a former well known resident of this village, aged 81. Deceased was for years engaged in the blacksmith business here. He was a member of Otsteningo [Otsiningo] Lodge F.& A.M., of Binghamton, and had been a Mason 58 years. For the past nine years he had been at the Masonic Home in Utica. He is survived by two grandchildren, Arthur F. Arrow, of Binghamton, and Mrs. E. B. Harring, of Oradell, N.J., both formerly of this place. The remains were brought to Norwich Tuesday and the funeral was held Thursday morning. Norwich Lodge, F. & A.M., conducting the service. The master of the Binghamton Lodge was present.

The Evening Journal of Vineland, New Jersey, dated 2 February 1906 includes an obituary for Nelson Cady. [47]

Nelson Cady, for many years a resident and member of the First Baptist Church, died at the Masonic Home in Utica, New York, Monday, January 22. He was 81 years old and had been a mason for 58 years. He is survived by two grandchildren, Arthur F. Arrow, of Bridgeton, and Mrs. E. B. Harring, of Oradell, N. J. The remains were buried in Norwich.

Gravestone
