Biography

Reuben was born 3 June 1812 in Butternuts, Otsego County, upstate New York, not far from Syracuse. He was the son of Alpheus and Mehitabel Cady. He is one of at least four men named Reuben Cady born in New York state within a few years of 1814. This makes tracking Reuben particularly difficult; he appears never to have been a farmer, which does probably eliminate those entries. His father, Alpheus, however was a farmer.

In the 1820 census[1], Alpheus and Mehitabel were again listed in Butternuts with two boys and two girls. Actually there were three boys and one girl: Lucius and Reuben, Harman and Caroline.

In the 1830 census[2], Alpheus and Mehitabel were again listed in Unadilla, New York (probably the same farm but now in a new district) with all six of their children, including Reuben.

On 22 October 1838[3] Reuben married Sarah E Chamberlain, presumably in Butternuts. They had four children together.

Reuben was initially a butter merchant and he, Sarah and the two children were in Jersey City in the spring of 1849 when Sarah began to suffer from chronic diarrhea following the birth of their fourth child. After four months she passed away on 10 August 1849, aged just 36[4]. The new-born child, Alice, died the month before. As far as it is possible to ascertain, Reuben never remarried.

In 1850[5], Reuben was living with his two young children in Jersey City. He was listed as a butter merchant.

Jersey City in 1854

In 1867 Reuben was listed as living at 435 8th Ave, New York[6] and was working as a clerk.

In 1869 Reuben was living at 224 Fulton Ave, Brooklyn and running a real estate business next door in number 222[7].

(In 1870, there was an RH Cady living in Alabama and working as a teacher[8], but this was probably not our Reuben.)

In 1887 Reuben was living at 958 Jefferson Ave in Brooklyn. He was by now retired.

Reuben died 25 November 1893, aged 81, in Greenwich, Ohio, presumably while staying with his daughter Fannie[9]. The cause of death is listed as dropsy, most likely congestive heart failure in today's terms.
