Biography

Ernest Griffith Caffey was born to Jefferson Davis Caffey and Martha Adeline Steen Caffey on March 23, 1894 near Rader, Missouri.

Ernest Griffith Caffey moved with his parents to the Happy Home neighborhood, near Panther Creek in Laclede County, Missouri, when he was twelve years old. This farm had been in his mother's family for many years. His parents were Jeff and Martha Stein Caffey. He took over the farm work at a young age, after his father became ill and passed away.

On April 5, 1921 he married Sadie Ellen Burns. Her parents were Robert and Anna Hawkins Burns. Ernest and Sadiee started their married life on the home place with Martha and her daughter, Mollie, living with them. Martha was very good to Sadie, as she was only seventeen when she married. She always spoke of how Martha helped her with the housework and cooking. As Martha grew older she became blind. Sadie took care of her for many years never complaining of her task. Family and friends were always welcome at Ernest and Sadie Burns Caffey's home.

Sadie Ellen Burns was born October 30, 1903 near Phillipsburg, Missouri in Laclede County, Missouri. Her parents, Bob and Anna Burns, were hard working farmers and had a large family to raise. When Sadie was at home she helped with the little children while her dad and brothers worked long hours in the field.

Ernest Griffith Caffey and Sadie Ellen Burns Caffey were blessed with three daughters born into their family.

Wanda Lee Caffey was born February 19, 1923. She married William Seeby. To this union was born one child. William W. Seeby, Jr. Later she was divorced and married Arta Mahaffey. They had one child. Charles Ernest Mahaffey. Arta passed away in 1956. Wanda lived and worked in Springfield, Missouri.

Peggy Ann Caffey was born November 22, 1926. She married James E. Sharp July 28, 1947. They had four children: James Donald Sharp, Robert Ewing Sharp, John Lee Sharp and Patricia Ann Sharp. They had a dairy farm in Webster County, Missouri, near Niangua, where they worked full time.

Eda Marie Caffey was born October 15, 1932. She married Russell L. Sharp. They had three children: Margaret Ann sharp, David Russell Sharp and Cynthia Ellen Sharp. They also had a dairy farm near Orla, in Laclede County, Missouri where they are employed full time.

Ernest Griffith Caffey and Sadie Burns Ccaffey worked hard and had many happy times on the farm. In 1968 they sold the farm and moved to Conway, Missouri. They enjoyed their home in their retirement years.

Sadie Burns Caffey passed away on October 22, 1971.

After Sadie's death, Ernest lived in Conway and was very active in the later years of his life. He enjoyed gardening and tending his flowers. His family, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, neighbors and friends always enjoyed visiting in his home and seeing his many collectors items. He attended Happy Home Presbyterian Church where he and Sadie had been members for many years. Ernest had been the song leader at Happy Home for over fifty years.

On June 1, 1985, Ernest Griffith Caffey passed away at the age of 91 in Conway, Missouri. Ernest was the only surviving child of Jeff and Martha Caffey. He had lived in Laclede County, Missouri all of his life. He was laid to rest at the Happy Home Cemetery in Laclede County, Missouri.
