Biography

Michael Richard Cahill born about 1813, son of Edmond Hibbits Cahill and Dorothea Delany. [1]

Ballyragget Townland, is in the Electoral Division of Ballyragget, in Civil Parish of Donaghmore, in the Barony of Fassadinin, in the County of Kilkenny. [2]

Michael received a full education, attending Stoneyhurst College in Blackburn in the north-eastern English county of Lancashire, and the prestigious Trinity College, Dublin, where he studied law, eventually qualifying as a barrister-at-law.

Michael Cahill married first on 21 Aug 1843 to Margaret Magan, daughter of Francis and Margaret Mary (Hussey) Magan. [4]

In later life Michael Cahill held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for County Kilkenny and the office of High Sheriff of County Kilkenny as well as being a leading member of the Grand Jury of County Kilkenny. He was also agent to Lord Mountgarret at Ballyconra House, County Kilkenny; the latter was Henry Edmund Butler, 13th Viscount Mountgarrett, whose father, Edmund, had been the last Viscount Mountgarrett to live there. The Cahill family took up residence in Ballyconra House circa 1846 and it is likely that most of Michael Cahill’s children were born in the house.

Michael Richard Cahill married, secondly, in 1876 to Hon. Elizabeth Gwendoline Theodora Netterville, daughter of James Netterville, 7th Viscount Netterville and Eliza Kirwan.

Michael Cahill and his second wife, Eliza, lived at Ballyconra House, Ballyraggett, Co. Kilkenny. [5] [6]

Michael Netterville Cahill died 3 Oct 1877 at Ballyconra House, Ballragget, County Kilkenny. Will proved 12 Dec 1877 by the oaths of sons Michael Hussey Cahill and John Nugert Cahill.[7]
