Marie was born about 1877. She is the daughter of Edward Cahill and Mary A. Cahill. In 1888 she immigrated from Ireland on the S/S City of Chester [1] with her mother, sister Agnes and brothers Hugh and John,
Research Notes
The families of two immigrant parties named Cahill have been combined into one Cahill family. The first party immigrated in 1888, referenced above, was led by the mother, Mary A. Cahill. The second party, led by the father Edward immigrated in 1891. [2] Considerations in joining these two parties into one family are based on the following:
Grandson of one the children recalls hearing that the family traveled in two waves to ease integration into the new home.
One party was led by a mother only, and one party was led by a father only.
Grandson recalled multiple names from each party, prior to being sighted in the passenger lists. They were Hugh and Agnes from the 1888 party, and Anne, Delia, and Kate from the 1891 party.
Two inconsistencies needed to be resolved. First, there were two Kates. Inspection of the 1888 passenger lists shows that the Kate traveling with that party was most likely one of two domestics, but listed with a ditto under the name Cahill. Second, there were two Johns. However, the John in the 1891 party was listed as age 11 months, which would not have allowed him to be the son of a mother who had immigrated three years prior. It is reasonable to assume that this John was the son of one of the daughters, likely Anne, who was listed as age 19 at the time.
