Samuel Caig was born in Lancashire, England.

Samuel was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, England, on August 19, 1897. He was presented for Baptism by his parents, David, and Marion, on September 19, 1897, at Saint Peter Church in Liverpool. His father passed away prior to 1901. Samuel is listed as a "Boarder", along with his mother and sister. (It appears they are using middle names or aliases for some reason). By 1911, the family is on its own, and living in the Everton area of Liverpool.

Samuel was a Merchant Seaman during World War I. He was a crew member of the ship "Adriatic" in 1918, and is listed on a manifest dated September 1918 for a voyage between Liverpool, and New York. Samuel received the British War Medal for his service.

Samuel married Violet Irene Stephens in Liverpool, Lancashire, England, in 1931. The couple would have three children. Samuel passed away in 1945. His death was registered in Liverpool North.
