The News-Review, Roseburg, Oregon 31 July 1998 Viola Beatrice Mathis MATHIS, Viola Beatrice – age 78, of Roseburg passed away July 29, 1998 at her home. She was born October 19, 1919 in McKinney, Texas to James Earl and Ethel (Duncan) Cain. Viola grew up and attended school in McKinney, Texas. Her family moved to California in the mid 1930's. On December 19, 1938 in Visalia, California she married Roscoe Mathis. In 1940 they moved to Roseburg. Viola enjoyed taking care of her home, working in her yard and garden and loved her pets. She is survived by her husband Roscoe Mathis of Roseburg; a son Charles R. Mathis and his wife Betty, of Roseburg; sisters Marie Jones and her husband Tom of Roseville, California and Betty Goeringer of Roseburg; a brother Robert Cain and his wife Gerry of Canby, Oregon, two grandchildren Taunia Belles and her husband Dennis of Aberdeen, Washington and Vicki Lynn Mathis of Roseburg and seven great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Adrian, Zack, Tyler, Jason Amanda and Nathan. Viola was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers Irvin and Doyle Cain. Cryptside services will be held at 1 p.m. On Monday, August 3, 1998 within Roseburg Memorial Gardens. Victor Stefanich will officiate. A time for visitation will be held Sunday, August 2, 1998 at Wilson's Chapel of the Roses from 3 to 5 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made in Viola's memory to Mercy Hospice, 2700 Stewart Parkway, Roseburg, Oregon 97470. WILSON'S CHAPEL OF THE ROSES is in charge of arrangements.
