Biography

John was the 1st of 13 children born in Montgomery Co., Virginia to his parents James Cain Sr. and Elizabeth Carper. His parent later moved and then died in Shelby Co., Ohio.

The farmer John married Catherine Bish on 24 Jan 1826 in Montgomery Co., Virginia. Between 1827 and 1853 they had 13 children they named: Sarah, Virginia, Nancy, Elizabeth, Mary Jane, Malinda, John Alexander Jr., Abraham, Lucinda, James A., William M., David and Jacob Cain.

John's sister, Nancy, married his wife's brother, David.

In 1832 John and Catherine moved from Virgina to Shelby Co., Ohio. Then in 1835 they moved on to Pleasant Township, Grant Co., Indiana. There they settled upon a farm where they lived out the rest of their days.

He wife Catherine had 3 brothers who were born in Virginia that also relocated to Grant Co., Indiana.

At the time of Catherine's death in 1888 they are the oldest couple in the county. While they were members of the Methodist Church it is reported that Mr. Cain used tobacco and whiskey regularly until a few years before his death.
