James was born in 1928. He was raised on the Cain family farm “Selkirk”, Wilkin parish, Strathdownie. Nicknamed “Arg” by his siblings, because his ego would not let him lose an argument.
Educated at Strathdownie State School no. 2883 in Old School Road, Strathdownie. It opened in 1889 and closed in 1948. Jim left school about 1940 to work on the farm, due to a wartime shortage of labour.
Jim married Val Deacon in 1950 in Scots Church Casterton. He received ownership of “Dunkirk” in Drajurk parish north of “Selkirk” as a wedding gift from his father.
Jim sold Dunkirk in 1955 and moved to a small farm at 35 Dalrymple Road, Sunbury. Jim failed to manage his growing debt and returned to the family farm at Strathdownie. Again, his father came to the rescue and pulled the strings to obtain a block of government land to the west of “Selkirk” in Kaladbro parish.
While living at Sunbury, Brother James Lachlan Cain, grazier of Sunbury, was initiated in Romsey Lodge No. 97 (now Macedon Ranges) Lodge No. 97) on 7 Jun 1956 as an Entered Apprentice Freemason. Passed as a Fellowcraft Freemason on 4 Apr 1957. Master Mason on 4 Jul 1957. Resigned 22 May 1958.
On returning to Strathdownie, Jim Joined Glenelg Lodge No. 154 on 2 Apr 1958. Resigned 31 Jul 1965.
Advanced as a Mark Master Mason in Casterton Mark Lodge No. 64 on 9 May 1959 with Mark Grand Lodge Certificate No. 36350. Resigned May 1966.
Jim left Strathdownie again in 1962 to run the Glenthompson Store 1962-1967. His relation ran the Maroona Hotel at the same time. When he went bankrupt, Jim moved to Melbourne, where he mostly worked as a delivery driver or taxi driver.
When he went into trucking, he went broke again in 1976. He ran a milk bar at Wantirna for a year 1876-1977, then won the contract for a school bus run from Buchan to Bairnsdale.
He moved to Ballarat in the 1980s, ran a fish shop at first, then another school Bus run, from Manibaddar to Ballarat.
He passed away in 2016 in a nursing home in Altona North.
