In 1913, Jean Cairns was the fifth woman called to the bar in Ontario, and the first woman member of the Hamilton Law Association. She practised law with her husband Philip and later with her daughter Alma Malcolm.
She was the informant, "Mrs. Jean Morris", to the death of her father James Cairns in 1932.
