Biography

John was baptised on 14 Aug 1771 in the parish of Banchory Ternan, Kincardineshire, Scotland:[1] Alexander CALDER at Hirn had a son baptised named John.[2]

John was a witness at the 1823 christening of his grandson Arthur WOOD in the parish of Fetteresso: Robert WOOD, Shoemaker, in Links of Arduthie, had a son by his wife Janet CALDER, born 3rd and baptized 27th 1823, named Arthur. Witnesses Andrew WOOD, Shoemaker in Stonehaven, and John CALDER, Forrester at Fetteresso.[3]

John is listed as a Forester in the village of Fetteresso, within the parish of Fetteresso, Kincardineshire, Scotland from 1834 to 1840.[4][5][6][7][8][9][10] It seems likely he worked in Fetteresso Forest.

In 1841, he worked as a Forester and lived with his wife Janet in the village of Fetteresso, within the parish of Fetteresso, Kincardineshire, Scotland.[11] Also present in the household was John WOOD (10), their grandson, and Jane DUNBAR (20, a Female Servant).[11] [John's age was given as 65, but in the 1841 census those over 15 were to be rounded down to the nearest 5 years.]

In 1851, he was a Widower, working as a Crofter Of 3 Acres & Forester and living in the parish of Fetteresso, Kincardineshire, Scotland.[12] Also present in the household was Mary ROBERTSON (61, House Keeper) and Ann MITCHELL (13, General Servant).[12] John's age was given as 81 and his place of birth as Upper Banchory, Aberdeenshire.[12]

In 1853, John passed away in Fetteresso.[13] He had been in the service of the DUFF family for 63 years, working as a forester on their estate.[13]
