Biography

James Calder was a builder from Kirwee. He built the house at Darfield known as the "Jarman House". This house was built at the turn of the century for himself. Sadly he committed suicide at the age of 35 years when Douglas was 1 year old. "James Calder....is remembered for his kindness during the 1918 influenza epidemic, when he rode round on his horse delivering medicine for the Doctor. He later fell ill himself, and this together with other problems drove him to suicide." p.44 text shown below.

Three sons: Robert Alexander, Keith Vivian (Viv) and James Douglas (Doug).

James was buried at Halkett, Canterbury, New Zealand.

Siblings: John, Jeannie, Alexander, William, Helen, Albert Edward, George, Hugh George, Margaret, Annie, Robert, Mary. Source: MyHeritage.com Smart Matches - Hamish Calder. Unless a mistake has been made in the New Zealand Historical Records which gives Albert Edward’s DOB as 1883/15359 it probably means that Albert and James must have been twins. James DOB was 5 July 1883/12217. Given that Jame’s Birthday was in July it wouldn’t be possible for Albert also to be born in 1883 unless they were twins.

Calder-924 and Calder-615 appear to represent the same person because: Hello Rhys, thanks for your information regarding Adelaide (Beatrice) Moffat. Although I had a close relationship with Beatrice I only the only siblings that I met were Catherine (May) and Albert (Bert).

I have unwittingly created an ID for my paternal grandfather, James Calder (Beatrice's husband).
