He served as a signaller in the 37th infantry CMF and was stilll serving with them on enlistment. He was a single 21 year old farmer. He embarked on HMAT A44 Vestalia on 11th July 1916 with 4th reinforcements 53rd battalion.

Bruce was taken into B Company in France on 26th October 1916.On 3rd April 1917 he was wounded in action receiving a shrapnel wound to his leg and was taken to 15th Field Ambulance and then to hospital in England for treatment. He returned to his unit on 27th August 1917, and while engaged in the battle for Polygon Wood he was killed in Glencourse Wood. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres, Belgium.
