Sarah Caldwell was the first female conductor of the New York Metropolitan Opera and the longtime conductor of the Opera Company of Boston. She is considered the First Lady of opera in Boston.
Sarah Caldwell was born in Maryville, Missouri on 6 March 1924 to Edwin Fletcher Caldwell and Carrie Margaret Baker. She was a child prodigy who publicly gave violin solos at age ten, Sarah Caldwell was an American opera conductor, impresario, and stage director of opera. She had an interest in cultivating big stars and emerging performers alike. Caldwell died of heart failure in 2006.
