Biography

Margaret Caldwell History This profile is for Mary not Margaret. Mary's father is not Thomas it is David Caldwell. In 1760, Mary was not 14 years of age but only 3 years of age.

In November Court 1760, Margaret Caldwell, of lawful age [at least 14 years old], orphan and only child of Thomas, deceased, chose Paul Carrington, Gent. to be her guardian. Carrington and Clement Read, Jr. provided security. (Lunenburg County Order Book 6:187B.) On 11 July 1763, John Brent and his wife, Margaret (Caldwell) sold 500 acres on Cubb Creek to David Caldwell. Margaret is identified as the daughter of Thomas Caldwell, deceased, and Thomas "Died without making any will not having any Issue Except the said Margarett." Also, "by Reason of the above Named Thomas Caldwell Setling the said Land it is reported that his heir is entitled to the said land." This land that Thomas Caldwell settled was at the time of the sale, lived on by David Caldwell. Witnesses included Wm. Terell Mills, George Pattillo, George Caldwell, James Mitchell. A certificate of dower release was filed. (Lunenburg County, Deed Book 9:286.)

Research Notes

There seems to be some confusion on this profile. Mary or Margaret, I tend to lean toward Mary.

Mary Thankful Alice Caldwell

According to Ailsworth et al: "John Brent, who married the granddaughter of John Caldwell, was a justice from 1771 until his death in 1781." [Timothy S. Ailsworth, Ann P. Keller, Lura B. Nichols, & Barara R. Walker, comps., Charlotte County, Rich Indeed (Charlotte County, Va: Charlotte County Board of supervisors, 1979), p. 44.]

4 March 1777. John Brent and Margaret his wife of Charlotte County to John Donelson of Pittsylvania . . . 200 pounds current money of Virginia . . . 334 acres . . . in Pittsylvania on the south side of Banister River . . . "which said Land was Granted unto Thomas Chadwell by Letters Patent Bearing Date the fifth Day of June One Thousand seven Hundred and fourty Six? . . . "containing as therein Expressed 334 acres . . ." Wit: Edmond Brown, Robt. Chadwell, Stockley Donelson, David Chadwell. (Pittsylvania County Deed Book 4:339) Margaret married Valentine Sublett, son of William A. Sublette and Susannah Allen, on 4 Nov 1782 in Charlotte County, Virginia. (Valentine Sublett was born in 1754 in Albemarle County, Virginia and died in May 1808 in Green County, Kentucky.)

Margaret also married John Brent, son of James Brent and Catherine Newton, on 2 Jun 1762 in Lunenburg County, Virginia. (John Brent was born about 1739 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, died in 1781 in Charlotte County, Virginia and was buried in Cornwall Parish, Charlotte County, Virginia.)

There has been much confusion regarding the Caldwells and the Beverly Mann family of southern Virginia, many of whom left after the Revolutionary War for Kentucky. Many of them settled in Mercer County, KY. A few other Mann cousins also migrated to Kentucky, as well as other southern states, after the war. One fact that led to the muddled genealogy was the repeated use of a short list of first names by these families at the time. So, online, one can find 2 or 3 women named Dicey Mann (all from the same extended Mann family of VA) blended into one human, with various husbands, most of whom did marry a Dicey Mann, but not the one listed by some online tree.

One significant factor that also leads to confusion is the insistence by researchers to add middle names and initials for people who never appeared to have any middle name. Usually, the researcher has borrowed a middle name from a descendant, and then backfilled their tree with the assumption that the older ancestors must have had the same middle name. Often, there is ZERO evidence for this. In fact, studies of pre-1800 records have concluded that only 5-10% of pre-1750 colonists HAD a middle name that was mentioned in any type of original record.

So, perhaps, Mary Thankful Alice Caldwell did have 2 middle names at a time when most people had zero. Already, an Irishman with no known link to her had been listed as a first husband, with no evidence that this Abraham Smith had ever set foot in Virginia. It would be helpful if researchers would cite their sources for information that goes against the customs of the ancestors' times. Numerous pre-1800 Caldwell men have been given middle names by researchers, even though they appear in records with NO middle name.
