William was born on 5 Apr 1768 in Staunton, Augusta, Virginia. He was the son of William Caldwell Calhoun and Agnes (Long) Calhoun.

He married first Rebecca Tanneyhill.

He married second Loraine Sims on 6 Dec 1785.

He died on 1827 in Abbeville, South Carolina.
