Alexander was born in 1700 to Samuel Cahoon and Mary Hunter Cahoon. He passed away in 1776. [1] [needs link for citation]
Alexander Colquhoun [ancestral spelling of surname] was apparently a Lieutenant in the state Militia of Virginia at the age of 57 in 1757. This is the only practical information we have for him. This is a recreation of a state request for medications. [2]
Research Notes
I have searched all of Ancestry, and every other tree. There are plenty of trees with Alexander Cohoon/Colquhoun but not one with any proper citation on him such as a baptism, marriage, or burial. Not even a last will and testament. Then I remembered about a fire I had heard of... did a search and here we are. You can read the short story for yourselves. Fires Plagued Nansemond
After you do, if you know of any information with citations we can use to help us know Alexander Cohoon/Colquhoun better, please add it or contact Linda above. Many thanks for your help!

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Alexander by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Alexander:
I have been working with a DNA Genealogist recently and he indeed is not Samuel’s son. He went to North Carolina and James Irving is his son but Samuel is not his father. The YDNA Halpogroup’s are totally different. I am from his ancestry. There is more testing being done but it looks like his father was William Audley Calhoun Colqhoun who was born in County Tyrone, Ireland and came to the United States. So far my cousin, who did his Big Y700 on FTDNA shows this and matches the correct Halpogroup. Note: There are 2 groups who are completely different.
Could you please provide the research your DNA genealogist discovered? If you are indeed a descendant of William Audley Calhoun/Colquhoun, then we are cousins!
I truly do not want to say this, however, Alexander Calhoun was not likely a son of Samuel Calhoun. In Southern Historical Families, Volume V, there was no mention of an Alexander as a son of either of three generations of Samuel Calhoun's sons, full stop. Apart from the flimsy Ancestry paper where he ordered medicines? This has nothing to do with what is in the biography and the link to FamilySearch is proof of nothing, either.
