Biography

James was born in London in 1786.[1] His parents were Joseph and Mary Calkin.[1] he was christened at the Lying-in Hospital, Endell Street, London on 21 September 1786, two days after his birth[2], suggesting that he not have been expected to live.

His brother Joseph taught James to play the violin.[1] He went on to make a career in music. In 1823 he became a Director of the Philharmonic Society.[1] For some thirty years he was organist at Regent Square Church, London.[1] He played the cello in orchestras.[1] Much of his musical activity was as a teacher, and he became a professor at the London Academy of Music.[1]

James also composed. Among his compositions were string quartets, an overture, a symphony and a large number of voluntaries for organ.[1] The British Library catalogue includes songs and works for piano.[3]
