Myra Philena Calkins was born July 7,1848 at Alpha, Henry, Illinois. She was the daughter of Anson Calkins and his wife Huldah G. Griffin Calkins.

The Calkins family was living in Henry County, Illinois in 1850 and in 1870 can be found in Oxford, Henry, Illinois, USA.

On April 23 1873 Myra Philena Calkins married Alexander Allen Shaw, the son of Samuel Shaw and Lucinda E. Barrett Shaw, the ceremony taking place at Aledo, Mercer, Illinois. Eight children were born to this couple.
