D., is one of the foremost educators and authors Canada has produced. He began to teach in Cornwallis, in 1848, and in 1857 was appointed headmaster of the Page 597:Model School at Truro. In 1864 he was appointed the first Inspector of Schools for King\'s County, but in the autumn of the next year he returned to Truro as Professor of English and Classics in the Provincial Normal School, This position he held until 1869, when he succeeded the Rev. Alexander Forrester, D. D., as Principal of the Normal School. The last position he filled ably until the summer of 1900, when he retired. From Acadia University Dr. Calkin early received the degree of M. A., in 1909, he was honored by Dalhousie University with the degree of LL.D. Dr. Calkin\'s authorship covers the following eudcational works: \"General Geography of the World,\" 1869, revised several times and still in use in Nova Scotia; \"Introductory Geography;\" \"History of the Dominion of Canada;\" \"Brief History of Great Britain;\" \"Historical Geography of Bible Lands;\" \"Notes on Education;\" \"A Discussion of Method, SchoolOrganization and School Management.\" In Horton also were Jeremiah Calkin, formerly of Lebanon, Conn., and his wife Mary. They had children : James, b. Jan. 27, 1757, m. Oct. 20, 1777, Elizabeth Wickwire ; John, b. June 28, 1759 ; Nathaniel, b. July 14, 1763, in Horton, m. Jan. 3, 1788, Sabra, dau. of James Harris, b. March 21, 1765 ; Elijah, b. Feb. 3, 1766 ; Elisha, b. March 17, 1768 ; Keturah, b. Jan. 17, 1771 ; Jeremiah, Jr., b. July 11, 1775 ; Mary, b. Dec. 9, 1780, probably m. Dec. 22, 1789, m. to ___________ McLatchy ; Ann, b. April 18, 1793 ; Olive, b. Sept. 26, 1796, m. ___________ to Magee, and d. Jan. or July 18, 1872; Sophia, b. Calkin, Esq., of Kentville, for many years postmaster of the town, and long engaged in business there.

Notes "Among the retired men now living in Albion is numbered Albert B. Calkins, who was born near Utica, N. Y., March 25, 1830. His parents were Joshua and Fanny (Cooper) Calkins, both natives of Connecticut. Their family comprised eight children, the subject of this notice being the seventh in order of birth. Cornelius now living in Lushton, Neb.; Maria married Chester Kellogg and both she and her husband died in the Empire State; Mary A. married William Oyer and after his demise Thomas Wellington, and later died at Springport, Mich.; David died at Lushton, Neb.; Lois is the wife of John W. Clark, of Maynard, Iowa; Samuel died when six years old; Wallace is living in Springfield, Ill. The father, who was a blacksmith, died in 1835 in Angelica, Allegany County, N.Y. The mother breathed her last in Springport, Jackson County, Mich., in June 1866.
