John was born about 1867 in Hamilton County, Illinois. His parents, Joel Call and Margaret Bigly must have passed away when he was about 5 or 6. The family was last documented in the 1870 census in Hamilton County, Illinois. His brothers and sisters were raised by other families in the area. The children were labeled as "orphans" according to family stories.
John married Ellen "Nellie" Curtis in Posey County, Indiana, and together they had 6 children. The family moved to Detroit around 1912 when the oldest son, Arthur, convinced the family to relocate.
He passed away about 1943 in Detroit, Michigan.

According to my family, John Call and his siblings were orphaned. His parents, Joel Call and Margaret Bigley, were last documented in the 1870 census in Hamilton County, Indiana. John and his siblings were split up and raised by other families in the surrounding area. Joel Call's younger brother, John Call Jr. and wife Harriet Barker, lived next door in 1870 in Hamilton County. They did not take any of Joel's children in, but John Call Jr. and wife Harriet remained in the Hamilton County area until his death in 1896. There is a will for their father, John Call Sr., probated in 1873 which lists John Jr. as the executor and Joel as receiving a mule.
