Michael Callaghan aka Brophy, was the son of William Brophy. He was born in Sydney, 11 April 1839. His Birth was recorded in Sydney at the St James Parish Michael was baptized on the 17 May 1840, by Catholic Minister Joseph Platt. No record is available of his parents marriage. Michael lived around Wallabadah in 1859-60, then Liverpool Plains from 1860 to 1878. He was at Goondiwindi, Queensland, in 1878, and Willow Tree in 1880. He later went to New South Wales and Roma, Queensland in 1882. Michael returned to Goondiwindi in 1889. In 1890 Michael Callaghan died at Yetman, from stirring his billy tea being brewed, with a twig, taken from an Oleander bush. He died within the hour. Michael left behind his wife Catherine [born Kelly] and ten living children. A study of his life reveals that Callinan was his stepfathers name, which he choose to use rather than "Brophy". William Brophy and Mary White. This couple had two children, Michael and Margaret Brophy. Mary then married John Callanan/Callinan and had Catherine, John and Mary Jane. All five children would try to use various derivations of the Callinan name but by 1870 all five would use the surname Callaghan. His father, William Brophy, entered into a defacto relationship with a Mary White. Michael Brophy was born in 1839. His Father William Brophy died in 1844. Mary White then married John Callanan in the Maitland district in 1846. After John's death at Blandfordin 1857 Mary married John Heam in Wallabadah, in 1860, then she later married James Caffrey at Moombi in 1872. Mary died at Wallabadah in 1893. Catherine Callaghan [Kelly] died 5 September 1908, at the mining town of Silver Spur, east of Texas, Queensland. Surprisingly the Callaghan family tree does not start with a Callaghan. In fact the entire family has nothing to do with the name Callaghan. But for the latter descendants it is interesting to understand what happened. As described on the poster attached it is easier to follow the female origin as Mary White is the common link to the Callaghan Story. The first female that came to Australia to start the Callaghan line was named Mary White. She entered into a defacto relationship with a William Brophy in Sydney. They would have two children Michael 1839 and Margaret 1841? Mary and William seem to have parted ways by 1846. Mary lived in the Maitland District with her two children to William Brophy and marries John Callanan. Mary and John have three children. Catherine, John and Mary Jane. Michael marries Catherine Kelly. Margaret marries William Baker. Catherine marries Peter Mullens and later Everitt Summons. John has a son William to a Mary Ann Anderson but never married. Mary Jane married William Henry Stephens. Mary and John raised five children but over the years they all seem to use various derivations of the name Callanan up to 1870. The girls obviously married so took on their husband’s names but the boys seem to adopt the surname Callaghan. From 1870 all descendants of the male lines maintain that name down to this day.
