Biography

Susannah was born in Tennessee in 1804. In 1819, just after her 15th birthday, she married James Spence. She died in Livingston County, Illinois in 1879.

In statements from George Haley and Josephine Haley Cannefax, which can also be found on their profiles, they confirm that she was John Callahan and Elizabeth Royston / Rishton Callahan's daughter. In a letter dated 1902, preserved by The Lawrence County Historical Society Bulletin, Dated October 1987,[1] George says that one of Elizabeth's daughters was named Susan. He also confirms that Josephine Cannefax is his daughter.

In Josephine Cannefax's Eastern Cherokee Application[2] she says - "Our grandmother was a Cherokee Indian, she lived in Alabama, Mississippi. Her husband was killed in the Black Hawk War, while trying to protect his home and country. After his death she came to Tennessee to her daughter, Louvisa Riston Haley, then to Illinois to Susan Riston Spence, another daughter. Then returned to Alabama, all alone on horse back, about 1880 to get some money." She also confirms that her father was George Haley, her sibling's names, and that her grandmother was "Elizabeth Roiston Callahan."
